Historique :	Adrien Duthoit étudie d'abord les arts décoratifs, avant d'adhérer en 1894 à la Société de Saint Jean pour l'encouragement de l'art chrétien. Il adhère aussi quelques temps au mouvement Rosecroix et se distingue par de grandes compositions d'inspiration symboliste et chrétienne. L'oeuvre est présentée au salon de la Société des Arts décoratifs contemporains de 1905.

Précision sur l'inscription :	Ecrite en latin au bas du tableau, l'inscription évoque le coeur de la sainte et renvoie à une parole du Christ qui aurait souligné qu'il demeurait dans le coeur de Gertrude comme en une délicieuse demeure.
Précision_sur la representation :	Sainte Gertrude la Grande ou de Helfa était une grande mystique et compta parmi les épouses privilégiées de Jésus. Née en 1222 et morte en 1302, elle a écrit ses révélations dans un livre, LE MESSAGER DE LA BONTE DIVINE.
